I've lived and worked here in Shoja for a while now, and honestly, the best part is seeing people arrive and immediately relax. Shoja, up here at about 2,650m above sea level in the Seraj Valley, offers a different kind of quiet. People often come looking for a break from places like Manali or Kasol, and that's exactly what you find here: genuine calm.

If you're planning a trip our way, you're probably wondering where to stay. Shoja has a few guesthouses and some places that call themselves hostels. Today, I want to tell you about Nesto Stay and why I think it's a good choice for visitors.

Shoja: A quiet mountain spot

Shoja isn't like those big, busy tourist towns. It's a small village in the Kullu district, in the Jalori Pass region. We're surrounded by Himalayan forests, and the mountains are just there, everywhere you look. People come here to slow down, to actually breathe, and to see stars at night without city lights washing them out.

It's a place for walks, for sitting with a cup of chai, and simply being outdoors. If you've spent time in Jibhi or Tirthan Valley, you'll find Shoja has a similar feel, but I think it's still a little less busy. Jibhi and Tirthan Valley are destinations you can easily visit from here, but Shoja itself is where I really feel that sense of peace.

Why Nesto Stay is a good place to settle in

Here at Nesto Stay, we try to make a place that feels like a comfortable home base for anyone exploring or just seeking quiet. We're easy to find, right near the Shoja bus stand, next to Firgun. We're a mountain hostel, and we also have a café that many people in the area enjoy.

We have both dorm beds – good if you're on a budget or want to meet other travellers – and private rooms if you need your own space. Most of our rooms and balconies have mountain views, so you can often catch the sunset or just look out at the forest.

Our café: Always open

The Nesto Café is for both our guests and anyone passing through Shoja. We put a lot of effort into the food. I often hear good things about our momos and the kadhai paneer, and people tell me they like the coffee, too. It's a relaxed place to sit, eat, read, or chat, with those mountain and forest views always visible. You'll often find people just enjoying the quiet from our balconies.

Things to do from Nesto Stay

One of the best things about being here is how much there is to do right nearby. We can help you with guided treks and village walks. Some popular routes include:

  • Jalori Pass: A short drive up, this is where many of the longer hikes start.
  • Raghupur Fort Trek and Camping: A proper outing, sometimes with camping near the old fort ruins.
  • Serolsar Lake Trek: A walk through pine forests to a sacred lake.
  • Shoja Waterfall Trek: An easier walk to a local waterfall.
  • Village Walk to Sajwar: A chance to see how local life unfolds here.

Most Friday and Saturday evenings, we also have bonfire nights with live music. It's a nice way to relax after a day out and meet other guests and visitors. If you're here in the colder months, we have live music planned all winter. Check our Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/nestostay) for details on who's playing.

What people say

We're really happy with the feedback we get. On Google, we have a 4.9/5 rating from 149 reviews, and on Booking.com, it's 9.9/10 from 14 reviews. Guests often mention the helpful staff, the cleanliness, and of course, the quiet setting and clear views for sunsets and stargazing.

Getting to Shoja

Getting to Shoja takes a bit of planning, but that's part of coming to the mountains.

How to reach us

  • By air: The closest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali), which is about 55km away and usually a 2-hour drive. From there, you can hire a taxi or catch a local bus.
  • By road: Most people drive or take a bus. The usual route from Delhi or Chandigarh goes to Aut, then Banjar, and finally up to Shoja.
  • Finding us: We're near the Shoja bus stand, right next to Firgun. It's quite easy to spot once you're in the village.

A note on the roads

Expect winding hill roads. That's just how it is in the mountains! They're usually fine, but it's always smart to check conditions if you're coming in winter (for snow) or during monsoon season (for heavy rain or possible landslides). A quick call to us or checking local news before you leave can save you a lot of trouble.

Practical tips for your Shoja trip

  • What to pack: Layers are important. Even in summer, evenings can get cool. In winter, you'll need serious warm clothing: a good jacket, hat, and gloves are essential. Sturdy walking shoes are a must for any treks.
  • Best time to visit: Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) usually mean clear skies and pleasant temperatures. Summer (June) is also busy, though July and August bring the monsoon – expect very green views but also rain. Winter (December-February) can be beautiful with snow, but roads can be tricky.
  • Local transport: Once you're here, walking is the simplest way to get around the village. For longer trips, like to Jalori Pass or the Serolsar Lake trailhead, local taxis are available.
  • Connectivity: We do have Wi-Fi, but remember you're in the mountains. Sometimes connections are a bit slower than in big cities, so keep that in mind.

Explore beyond Shoja

While Shoja itself has plenty to keep you busy, it also makes a good base for visiting other places nearby:

  • Jibhi and Tirthan Valley: These are destinations not far from here, with more options for riverside walks, fishing, and general exploring. They are just a short drive away.
  • Great Himalayan National Park: For those interested in nature, parts of this UNESCO World Heritage Site are accessible from our region, offering chances for deeper trips into the wilderness.
  • Other landmarks: Jalori Pass is the local mountain pass with broad views. Raghupur Fort and Serolsar Lake are frequently visited trekking spots. You can also visit the Shoja Waterfall or Jibhi Waterfall. If you're interested in local culture, the Shringa Rishi Temple is also within reach.

Coming to Shoja means choosing a different pace, and we hope Nesto Stay contributes to that experience. We're here to help you make the most of your time, whether you're relaxing on a balcony, meeting new friends by the bonfire, or heading out on a mountain trek. We look forward to your visit.
