You're wondering if October is a good time to visit Shoja, especially with all the talk about landslides? That's a fair question. As someone who lives and works right here in Shoja, I can give you the straight scoop.

Honestly, October is one of my favorite months here. If you're thinking of coming up, you've picked a really sweet time of year.

Shoja in October: Clear skies and cool air

First, let's talk about those landslide worries. The monsoon season, which usually brings heavy rain and bad road conditions, is typically long gone by October. We usually see the last of the big rains by late September. So, once October arrives, the hills have had time to dry out, roads are usually clear, and the chance of any major landslide problems is very, very low.

Instead of rain, October gives us clear, blue skies and air that feels really fresh. The mountain views, which can be hidden by monsoon clouds, are usually wide open. You can see so far, and the sun feels just right during the day – warm enough to be comfortable, but cool enough that you'll want a light jacket.

Getting ready for winter

While it's rare for early October, we do start to notice winter approaching as the month goes on. Sometimes, towards the last week of October, we might even get a little bit of snow, especially higher up near Jalori Pass. It's usually just a dusting, more like a sneak peek of what's coming, and it has its own charm. You won't get heavy snowfall that blocks roads, but you'll feel that cold mountain air and maybe even see some frost on the ground in the mornings.

This change also means the trees start changing color, especially the broadleaf ones in our forests. You get these really pretty golden and red colors before winter fully sets in.

Why October is great for a Shoja trip

Beyond the settled weather, October lets you do a lot of different things.

Trekking and looking around

The clear weather and nice temperatures make it ideal for walking and exploring.

  • Jalori Pass and Serolsar Lake: The trek up to Serolsar Lake from Jalori Pass is lovely in October. The path is dry, the air is easy to breathe, and you see everything along the way.
  • Raghupur Fort: A hike to Raghupur Fort is much better without monsoon mud. You get huge views from the top.
  • Shoja Waterfall: The path to Shoja Waterfall is open, and the water flow is still good from the earlier rains, but it's not too strong.
  • Village walks: Simple village walks, like the one to Sajwar, are nice in the autumn sun. You can see local life without feeling rushed.

Lots of our guests at Nesto Stay specifically plan their treks for this time of year because the conditions are so good. We often help set up guided treks if you want someone local to show you around.

Quiet nights and starry skies

October tends to be less busy than the summer months, which means you can really enjoy the quiet of the mountains. Shoja gets a specific kind of calm.

And because the skies are so clear, October nights are fantastic for stargazing. We have very little light pollution up here, so the night sky really shows off. We often see guests just sitting out on our balconies, wrapped in blankets, watching the stars. Sunsets, too, are often very colorful in October, with deep oranges and purples.

Warm evenings and making friends

As the evenings get colder, our bonfire nights at Nesto Stay become even more popular. On Friday and Saturday evenings, we have our bonfires with live music. It's a good way to stay warm, share stories with other travelers and locals, and just relax after a day out. Our café also serves hot food like momos and kadhai paneer, which taste even better in the chilly evening air.

How to get here and what to pack

Getting to Shoja in October is usually easy.

Travel details

  • Road conditions: The roads from Delhi or Chandigarh, through Aut and Banjar to Shoja, are usually in pretty good shape in October. Just remember, these are winding hill roads, so always drive carefully and take your time.
  • Nearest airport: Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali) airport is about 55 kilometers away, which is roughly a 2-hour drive from Shoja. From there, you can find taxis or shared cabs up to Shoja without much trouble.
  • Bus stand: Nesto Stay is right near the Shoja bus stand, next to Firgun, so it's simple to find once you arrive in the village.

Even though I said heavy snowfall isn't expected in early October, it's always worth doing a quick check on road conditions before you leave, especially if you're traveling very late in the month. Things can shift quickly in the mountains.

Packing for October

You'll need to pack smart for the changing temperatures.

  • Layers work best: Days can be mild, but mornings and evenings are definitely cold. Think T-shirts, long-sleeved tops, a fleece or sweater, and a warm jacket.
  • Warm outerwear: A good, warm jacket is important for the evenings and early mornings, especially if you plan to be outside for stargazing or bonfire nights.
  • Comfortable shoes: For walking and trekking, sturdy, comfortable shoes with good grip are a must.
  • Accessories: Don't forget a warm hat, gloves, and thick socks, particularly if you get cold easily.
  • Sun protection: Even with cooler temperatures, the sun at this altitude (around 2,650m above sea level) can be strong. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a cap are still good to have.

Making Shoja your home base

Shoja itself is a quiet, peaceful village. It's where you come to truly unwind and be with nature, away from the busier tourist spots. Places like Jibhi and Tirthan Valley are popular nearby spots that many of our guests visit on day trips, but Shoja feels different – it's calmer.

Here at Nesto Stay, we try to be a welcoming spot for all kinds of travelers, whether you want dorm beds or a private room with mountain views. We really aim to make a relaxed place where you can enjoy the peace, the good food from our Nesto Café, and the company of other travelers. The feedback we get on Google (4.9/5 from 149 reviews) and Booking.com (9.9/10 from 14 reviews) often mentions the helpful staff, how clean everything is, and of course, those fantastic mountain and forest views from our balconies.

So, to answer your question: yes, October is a really good time to travel to Shoja. You'll find stable weather, clear views, and a perfectly chilly vibe that's just right for mountain adventures. Come say hello!
