Alright, so you're looking for a hostel in Shoja? Good call. Around here, we don't get the same crowds you'd find in places like Manali or Kasol, and honestly, that's what makes it special. If you're done with the hustle and want a real mountain experience, you're looking in the right spot.

Up here, we're about 2,692m above sea level, right in Shoja village. This is the Seraj Valley, part of Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh, India. When folks ask me for a good place to stay, I usually tell them about Nesto Stay. It's a proper backpacker-friendly mountain hostel, with a café right here. You'll find us in Shoja village, just near the bus stand, right next to a place called Firgun.

What's Shoja really like?

Let's be clear, Shoja isn't Manali. You won't find endless shops or late-night parties. What you will find is quiet. Imagine waking up to birdsong, surrounded by tall Himalayan deodar forests, with big mountain views from your balcony. That's Shoja. It's the kind of place where you can actually slow down, breathe, and just be for a bit.

Most of our guests come here because they want the mountains, but without the constant noise. They're after quiet nights under a sky full of stars, and maybe a chance to walk through a proper Himachali village. If that sounds good to you, then Shoja is worth checking out. It's a solid alternative to some of the busier spots you might know.

Nesto Stay: your base in the mountains

Here at Nesto Stay, we've tried to make a place that feels comfortable, but with those incredible mountain views right outside. We've got dorm beds if you're on a budget, and private rooms if you want more space. Every room looks out onto the mountains, and most have balconies perfect for just sitting and taking it all in.

Our Nesto Café is a real hub – not just for guests, but for day visitors too. Honestly, the things people say about the food make us happy. Folks often mention the momos and kadhai paneer specifically, and how much they like the vibe here. It's a relaxed spot for a meal, a coffee, or just to sit and watch the forests and mountains. We hear a lot about how peaceful it is, how clean we keep things, and how helpful the staff are – that really means a lot. And yeah, the sunsets and stargazing? They're pretty special from here. Right now, we've got a Google rating of 4.8 out of 5 from 183 reviews.

Come Friday and Saturday evenings, things liven up a bit. We light a bonfire and often have live music. It's a really easy way to meet other travellers, swap stories, and just hang out under the mountain stars. Exactly what you'd hope for from a mountain hostel.

Exploring Shoja and nearby

Once you're settled in your hostel in Shoja, there's plenty to do around here. This region is great for trekking, but you don't need to be an expert.

  • Jalori Pass: A major landmark just a short drive up, it's a good spot to start a few different treks.
  • Serolsar Lake Trek: Walk through dense forest up to Serolsar Lake. It's a moderate trek and a favourite for many.
  • Raghupur Fort: You can trek up to the old Raghupur Fort. Sometimes people camp up there. The views from the top are wide open.
  • Shoja Waterfall Trek: A pleasant walk takes you to our local Shoja Waterfall.
  • Village walk to Sajwar: For a glimpse of local life, try a gentle walk to Sajwar village.

We can also help arrange guided treks and village walks if you'd rather go with someone who knows the trails. Jibhi is another place many travellers visit, about 5 km from Shoja. You could easily visit Jibhi or even head down to Tirthan Valley for a day during your stay. Just to be clear, Nesto Stay is in Shoja, but Jibhi and Tirthan Valley are close enough for easy day trips.

Getting to Shoja

Getting here means navigating winding hill roads, but honestly, that's part of the fun.

  • By Air: The closest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali), about 55 km away. Figure on a 2-hour drive from there to Shoja. You can usually get a taxi at the airport.
  • By Road: Most people drive from Delhi or Chandigarh. You'd typically go to Aut, then turn off towards Banjar, and then climb up to Shoja. It's a beautiful drive, but expect plenty of twists and turns as you gain altitude.

A quick heads-up on travel: Always check road conditions before you come, especially in winter or during monsoon. Snow can sometimes close Jalori Pass in winter, and heavy rain can mean landslides in monsoon. It's always best to be prepared, and it never hurts to ask local drivers what they expect.

Once you hit Shoja, Nesto Stay is easy to find. We're really close to the Shoja bus stand, right next to Firgun. You should spot our sign from the road.
